The Calgary Stampeders could get a big piece of their banged-up secondary back against the B.C. Lions, though the unit is unlikely to be at full strength.
Demerio Houston has been tentatively listed as the starter at the boundary cornerback but remains a game-time decision after missing the last two weeks with an ankle injury. The 2023 CFL interception leader had collected 16 tackles and two picks in three games prior to exiting the lineup.
Unfortunately for the Stampeders, Houston is one of three defensive backs carrying the game-time decision designation. Boundary halfback Kobe Williams (calf) and backup Tyler Richardson (groin) are also in jeopardy of missing kickoff, making it slim pickings on defence.
Calgary’s struggling pass rush has also been dealt a blow, as veteran defensive end Julian Howsare (quad) has been placed on the one-game injured list. Promising rookie Clarence Hicks will get the start, while depth Canadian Kelon Thomas (back) is also listed as a game-time decision.
Along the offensive line, starting right tackle Josh Coker has been scratched for undisclosed reasons and will be replaced by former Toronto Argonaut Trevon Tate. Left tackle D’Antne Demery (toe) remains out for the second week in a row, with rookie Eric Smith protecting Jake Maier’s blindside.
If anything were to happen to the top QB, veteran backup Matthew Shiltz (ankle) will not be available after being placed on the six-game injured list. Second-year pivot Logan Bonner will dress as his replacement.
The Calgary Stampeders (2-3) will host the B.C. Lions (5-1) on Sunday, July 21 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
