Riders’ QB Trevor Harris ‘progressing extremely well’ rehabbing from left knee MCL sprain

Veteran quarterback Trevor Harris was throwing on the sideline at Saskatchewan Roughriders practice on Tuesday.

It’s been over three weeks since Harris suffered an MCL sprain in his left knee which landed him on the six-game injured list. Riders’ head coach Corey Mace said he’s “progressing extremely well.”

Harris left the Green and White’s Week 3 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats shortly before halftime, suffering his injury on a hit from defensive end Nick Usher. He returned to the sideline to start the second half and warmed up wearing a brace but did not take another snap.

“We’re pleased with him and like I told you guys from the jump, knowing Trev and his mentality, how he attacks things, I wouldn’t be shocked if the guy wasn’t going through the full six weeks,” Mace reiterated. “He’s trending extremely well for us. I caught him in the gym this morning. He’s doing everything we expected. All signs are pointing positive for Trevor.”

Harris signed with the Riders as a free agent in 2023 but was limited to five games due to suffering a tibial plateau fracture in his right leg. The break required surgery and ended his first season in Regina after completing 67 percent of his passes for 1,274 passing yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions.

Through parts of three games this year, the Waldo, Oh. native completed 72 percent of his passes for 872 passing yards with seven touchdowns and three picks. During 12 CFL seasons with Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Montreal, and Saskatchewan, Harris has thrown for 30,756 passing yards with 167 touchdowns and 78 interceptions.

Shea Patterson has started two games in Harris’ place, producing a 1-1 win-loss record and completing 62 percent of his passes for 511 yards with one touchdown and one interception, plus 12 rushes for 36 yards and three majors. Mace has confidence in the six-foot-two, 202-pound mobile passer.

“He’s consistently gotten better. He’s making the right reads, so allowing him just to be him is the best thing,” Mace said. “He’s Shea Patterson, man. We’re excited to push forward with him. We think that he’s gonna go ahead and lead us.”
