Edmonton Elks hire Almondo Sewell as new defensive line coach

Published on

The Edmonton Elks have named Almondo Sewell as their new defensive line coach following the resignation of Nate O’Neal. The move came one day after Chris Jones was fired as the team’s head coach and general manager.

Sewell spent the first nine seasons of his playing career in Edmonton, helping the team win a Grey Cup in 2015. He was a seven-time West Division all-star and six-time CFL all-star during his tenure with the club and remains fifth all-time in team history with 60 quarterback sacks.

The 37-year-old spent the final three seasons of his playing career with the Montreal Alouettes, winning a second Grey Cup ring in 2023. In 185 career CFL games, he recorded 334 defensive tackles, 69 quarterback sacks, 36 tackles for loss, four fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles.

Sewell unofficially transitioned to coaching earlier this year when he joined the Elks in training camp as a guest coach. He continued to make the Alberta capital his off-season home even during his tenure with the Alouettes.

O’Neal was hired by the Elks this past season. The reason for his resignation remains unclear.

The Edmonton Elks (0-5) will visit the Ottawa Redblacks (3-2) on Friday, July 19 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
