Riders’ defensive line takes hit with Malik Carney, Charbel Dabire out vs. Lions

Published on

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will be missing several key bodies along the defensive line for their trip to Vancouver this week.

Starting defensive end Malik Carney (knee) and depth Canadian Nicholas Dheilly (shoulder) will spend time on the one-game injured list, while key rotational contributors Christian Albright (knee) and Charbel Dabire (knee) have been added to the six-game.

Carney had five tackles in four games to start the year, while Dabire has posted four tackles and two sacks. Albright notched two defensive tackles and another on special teams, as Dheilly chipped in with two special teams takedowns.

To accommodate the absences, top defensive tackle Anthony Lanier II will kick over to start at end. Miles Brown draws into the lineup as the starter in the middle, with Caleb Sanders making his CFL debut in a depth role.

Offensively, top receiver Shawn Bane Jr. returns to the lineup after missing last week due to the death of his sister.  He has caught 13 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns over three games this season. Replacement KeeSean Johnson has been placed back on the practice roster.

Running back Frankie Hickson will also go back to the practice roster with Canadian Thomas Bertrand-Hudon returning from injury. Canadian linebacker Adam Auclair is back in action after a brief absence as well and will be joined by American Zakoby McClain, all of whom should have an impact on special teams.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-0) will visit the B.C. Lions (4-1) on Saturday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
