Official: Winnipeg Blue Bombers sign veteran receiver Lucky Whitehead

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have brought back a familiar face to their ailing receiving corps, signing speedy American veteran Lucky Whitehead to the practice roster.

The 32-year-old became a free agent in February after spending three seasons with the B.C. Lions. He had a down year in 2023, producing 58 receptions for 728 yards with three touchdowns in 16 games, but was a CFL all-star in 2021 and posted a 1,000-yard campaign in 2022.

Whitehead entered the CFL in 2019 as a member of the Blue Bombers, catching 52 passes for 521 yards and two touchdowns. He added 92 rushing yards and one major, along with 596 kickoff return yards and another score to help the team to a Grey Cup victory.

In 60 CFL career games, the Florida Atlantic product has made 248 catches for 3,192 yards and 12 touchdowns. Prior to coming to Canada, he dressed for 30 NFL games with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets, recording nine receptions for 64 yards, 33 kickoff returns for 846 yards, and 44 punt returns for 305 yards.

The Blue Bombers have lost all-star receiver Dalton Schoen for the season with a knee injury, while fellow all-star Kenny Lawler and promising rookie Keric Wheatfall sit on the six-game injured list.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1-4) will host the Calgary Stampeders (2-2) at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday, July 12 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT.
