Winnipeg Blue Bombers all-star receiver Kenny Lawler left the CFL season opener after sustaining an upper-body injury and did not return.

Lawler exited the game shortly before halftime with what appeared to be an injury to his hand, wrist, or forearm. He posted three receptions for 26 yards prior to his departure, as the Bombers trailed the Montreal Alouettes 14-5 at the intermission.

Head coach Mike O’Shea was asked how Lawler was post-game and said: “We’ll see.”

The 29-year-old caught 50 passes for 901 yards with six touchdowns over 12 games last season. He made six receptions for 83 yards in the West Final against the B.C. Lions and three catches for 77 yards during the Grey Cup against the Montreal Alouettes.

“Kenny is one of the best players, if not the best player in the league, so it’s tough,” quarterback Zach Collaros said. “You’re never really going to fill that void that is Kenny Lawler. I’m really disappointed for him coming out of the game, he’s one of the most competitive people I’ve ever been around. That’s what makes it really tough.”

The Pomona, Calif. native has registered 215 receptions for 3,446 yards and 21 touchdowns since 2019. He is a two-time West Division all-star, one-time CFL all-star, and a two-time Grey Cup champion.
