Canadian linebacker Jesse Briggs has retired from professional football.
The 33-year-old was scheduled to become a free agent on Tuesday but has instead filed his retirement papers after nine seasons as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The native of Kelowna, B.C. was a second-round pick in the 2014 CFL Draft out of McGill University. He played 134 career regular season games, recording 51 defensive tackles, 76 special teams tackles, and four fumble recoveries.
The six-foot-one, 215-pound defender appeared in four Grey Cups games with Winnipeg, winning in 2019 and 2021.
The Blue Bombers will open the 2024 regular season by hosting the Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes at Princess Auto Stadium on Thursday, June 6.
