The Calgary Stampeders have agreed to terms with American offensive lineman Trevon Tate and, barring anything unforeseen, he’s expected to join the team on a one-year contract for the 2024 season, per sources.
The 27-year-old played in 10 games for the Toronto Argonauts in 2023, making eight starts at left tackle and two at right tackle. He was part of a unit that allowed a league-low 19 sacks and helped their running backs average 5.3 yards per carry.
The Memphis product originally signed with the Argonauts in August of 2021, though his first action after striking the deal came as an emergency COVID relief player with the Ottawa Redblacks. After reverting to the Double Blue, he started four games in each of his first two seasons but was limited by injury.
The six-foot-four, 295-pound blocker signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2019 but was released that same month, immediately heading to the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he dressed for one game. In four professional seasons, he has appeared in 21 contests, starting all of them.
Tate now joins a franchise that struggled at the tackle position in 2023, starting three different players on the left side and four on the right side.
Pending free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the current window, which closes on Feb. 11. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular team for 2024, however, these deals aren’t legally binding and can’t be finalized or made official until after free agency opens on Feb. 13.
The Stampeders will open their 2024 season on Friday, June 7 when they host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
