The Saskatchewan Roughriders have agreed to terms with American defensive back Jalon Edwards-Cooper and, barring anything unforeseen, he’s expected to sign with the team, per sources.

All-star shutdown corner Garry Peters gets lots of attention when discussing the B.C. Lions’ secondary, but the soon-to-be 27-year-old Edwards-Cooper has quietly developed into a great complement on the field side.

In 30 career CFL games, the five-foot-eleven, 175-pound cover man has recorded 79 defensive tackles and three interceptions.

Pending free agents can negotiate with teams across the league during the current window, which closes on Feb. 11. Players can agree to terms on a contract with a particular team for 2024, however, these deals aren’t legally binding and can’t be finalized or made official until after free agency opens on Feb. 13.

The Riders will open their 2024 regular season on Saturday, June 8 when they visit the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium. The team created an opening at cornerback earlier this off-season when they released veteran Nic Marshall following his arrest in Georgia.
