The Ottawa Redblacks have re-signed Canadian defensive back Justin Howell, who was set to become a free agent next week. The one-year deal ties him to Ottawa through the 2024 season.

The 30-year-old made 13 starts at safety this past season, recording 39 tackles and one forced fumble.

“I’m feeling very grateful to be heading into my sixth season in the CFL. At this point in my career, my sole focus is on winning a Grey Cup, and I have the utmost faith and trust in (head) coach (Bob) Dyce, the coaching staff, and the front office to lead us there,” said Howell in a statement.

“They’ve done a great job adding and re-signing important pieces this off-season, and I’m excited to be a part of that. I have so much love for the guys in that locker room. Ottawa has meant so much to myself and my family over the last 10 years, I couldn’t imagine hoisting the Cup in any other jersey than red and black. Excited to get back to work!”

The 30-year-old from Bradford, Ont. was a seventh-round pick in the 2018 CFL Draft and has been with the Redblacks ever since, making 99 defensive tackles, 27 special teams tackles, one sack, and five forced fumbles.

CFL free agency is set to get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at noon EST.

The Redblacks have a bye during the first week of the 2024 regular season before hosting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday, June 13 at TD Place Stadium.
