Los Angeles Chargers hire former CFL assistant coach, QB Marcus Brady as passing game coordinator: report

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to hire former CFL quarterback and assistant coach Marcus Brady as their new passing game coordinator, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Brady spent last season as a senior offensive assistant with the Philadephia Eagles, helping the team to an 11-6 record. He interviewed for the Chargers offensive coordinator job after the team hired NCAA National Championship winner Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach, but will settle for a lesser role.

It is unclear who will serve as play-caller, though former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman is reportedly joining the team in a major coaching capacity.

Brady previously served as offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts, earning promotion in 2021 after spending three seasons coaching the club’s quarterbacks. Indianapolis narrowly missed the postseason with a 9-8 record that year but finished eighth league-wide in scoring (26.5 points per game) and second league-wide in rushing yards (149.4 per game) thanks to a breakout season from running back Jonathan Taylor.

The 44-year-old was fired by the Colts eight games into the 2022 season after a 3-4-1 start. The team averaged 16.1 points per game under Brady, which ranked third-worst in the NFL, along with 339.4 yards per game, which was close to the middle of the pack.

The San Diego, Cal. native landed with the Eagles as an offensive consultant just three weeks later, contributing to an appearance in Super Bowl LVII. He was hired on a full-time basis shortly after the team lost that game to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brady played seven seasons at quarterback in the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Montreal Alouettes, throwing for 3,321 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions and rushing 122 times for 679 yards and six touchdowns.

He ended his playing career to pursue coaching and served as the receivers coach with Montreal under Marc Trestman for three seasons (2009-2011) before becoming the offensive coordinator in 2012. He left for Toronto in 2013 to join former colleague Scott Milanovich as the team’s offensive coordinator and served five years there before heading south to the NFL.

The Chargers posted a 5-12 record in 2023, finishing last in the AFC West. They currently hold the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
