That’s so Fletch: Alouettes re-sign American RB Walter Fletcher

The Montreal Alouettes have signed American running back Walter Fletcher to a one-year contract extension ahead of the opening of free agency.

The five-foot-nine, 202-pound back dressed for seven games in 2023, recording 58 carries for 266 yards and 23 receptions for 176 yards. It was Fletcher’s second season in Montreal after being acquired via trade from the Edmonton Elks early in 2022.

“Walter is an outstanding athlete who has a lot of acceleration when he runs with the ball,” Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia said in a statement. “He worked with our running backs in recent years and his positive attitude is contagious, both on the field and around our club. His return to our team is great news.”

In 32 CFL games with the Elks and Alouettes, the 27-year-old has posted 210 carries for 1,054 yards and a touchdown. He has also caught 74 passes for 706 yards and another major since making his debut in 2021.

Prior to beginning his CFL career, Fletcher rushed for 726 yards and five touchdowns in one season at Ball State University, adding 26 receptions for 306 yards and two majors. He transferred to the Cardinals after three years at Edinboro University, where he was named a Division II second-team All-American in 2017. In 2018, he became the first Fighting Scot to win PSAC Offensive Player of the Year since Trevor Harris and finished his tenure at the school with 632 carries for 3,913 yards and 41 touchdowns to go along with 93 receptions for 692 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

Montreal is set to open their 2024 campaign on Thursday, June 6 in a Grey Cup rematch against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
