He’s back: Winnipeg Blue Bombers sign QB Chris Streveler

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have officially brought back quarterback Chris Streveler, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract for the 2024 season. The deal is worth $120,000 plus playtime incentives, per sources.

The six-foot-one, 216-pound passer spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Blue Bombers, throwing for 2,698 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions and rushing for 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns. He joined the club straight out of the collegiate ranks at the University of South Dakota and was forced into action immediately following an injury to starting quarterback Matt Nichols.

The 29-year-old was especially effective during the team’s Grey Cup run in his second season with the club, rushing for 82 yards and a touchdown in the West Semi-Final against Calgary and throwing a touchdown pass in the championship game over Hamilton. He gained cult hero status in Winnipeg during the ensuing celebration as he sported a fur coat and cowboy hat while consuming in inordinate amount of beer.

Streveler has spent the past four seasons in the NFL as a member of the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and New York Jets. He threw for 141 yards, one touchdown, and one interception and ran for 21 yards over two seasons with the Cardinals. He also saw action with the Jets in 2022 following an outstanding preseason performance and threw for 90 yards with another 54 yards along the ground.

The native of Naperville, Ill. has been a free agent since August, though he worked out for the Chicago Bears earlier this month.

The Blue Bombers traded pending free agent quarterback Dru Brown to the Ottawa Redblacks earlier this month, after which he signed a two-year extension in the nation’s capital. Dakota Prukop, who served as the team’s third-string quarterback this past season, remains a pending free agent.
