Edmonton Elks release veteran DB Ed Gainey

The Edmonton Elks have released veteran defensive back Ed Gainey, who was set to become a free agent next month.

The 33-year-old started two games at boundary cornerback and 10 games at boundary halfback this past season, which was his second in Edmonton. He recorded 32 defensive tackles, one sack, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The five-foot-eleven, 193-pound cover man joined the Elks as a free agent in 2022 and played all 18 regular season games, making 47 defensive tackles, two forced fumbles, and one interception.

The 11-year veteran broke into the CFL as a member of the Montreal Alouettes in 2012 and has since been a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Elks. Through 144 career CFL games, Gainey has made 356 defensive tackles, 36 special teams tackles, 24 interceptions, seven forced fumbles, and four defensive touchdowns. He was named a CFL all-star in 2017 and 2018 as a member of the Riders.

CFL free agency is set to get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at noon EST.
