Toronto Argonauts hire former CFL players Maxie, Picard to coaching staff

The Toronto Argonauts have made two additions to their coaching staff, hiring Demetrious Maxie as defensive line coach and Dominic Picard as running backs coach.

Maxie started his coaching career in 2010 at the University of Texas El Paso, his alma mater, as a defensive line and linebackers coach. He spent the past eight years with the Edmonton Elks, serving as the team’s linebackers coach for two seasons before moving to coach the defensive line in 2018.

The 50-year-old native of Shreveport, La. played 13 seasons in the CFL from 1995 to 2007, including five as a member of the Argos. He won two Grey Cups in Toronto and was twice named a CFL all-star, finishing his career with 263 defensive tackles and 70 sacks.

Picard started his coaching career at the high school level in 2016 before moving on to the CEGEP level in 2020 at St-Jean Géants and Garneau Élans. He served as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at the Université de Sherbrooke this past season, his first in U Sports.

The 41-year-old native of Sainte-Foy, Que. was a third-round pick in the 2006 CFL Draft out of Laval Université. He played 10 seasons in the CFL at centre as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Argos, and Saskatchewan Roughriders, winning the Grey Cup with the Riders in 2013. He was also named an East Division all-star in 2011.

Picard was a teammate of Toronto head coach Ryan Dinwiddie with the Blue Bombers for three seasons.

The Argos lost defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Corey Mace to the Saskatchewan Roughriders earlier this off-season when he was named their head coach. Toronto also lost running backs coach Edwin Harrison to the Riders as he will coach the club’s offensive line in 2024.

It remains unclear who will serve as Toronto’s defensive coordinator this season.
