Edmonton Elks release Steven Dunbar Jr. ahead of roster bonus

The Edmonton Elks have released American receiver Steven Dunbar Jr. after one season with the team. As per 3DownNation reporter J.C. Abbott, he was due a $65,000 roster bonus on Jan. 15.

The 28-year-old played 13 games with the Elks in 2023 and made 39 receptions for 536 yards and five touchdowns. He finished the season on the six-game injured list and was the third-highest-paid receiver in the league.

The six-foot-three, 202-pound target broke into the CFL as a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2021. He made 116 catches for 1,630 yards and 10 touchdowns with the club and was named an East Division all-star in 2022.

The native of New Orleans, La. went unselected in the 2018 NFL Draft out of the University of Houston. He was a member of the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Dallas Renegades of the XFL prior to coming to the CFL.

CFL free agency is set to get underway on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at noon EST.
