Director of U.S. scouting Sammy Gahagan will not be back with the Edmonton Elks for the 2024 season.
Gahagan made the news public on Saturday via a statement on his Twitter account. The exact nature of his departure remains unclear.
“Dear Edmonton,
As the New Year approaches, I just wanted to say my time in Edmonton has come to an end. I wish the players nothing but the best, they will deliver. Thank you to all the Edmontonians who made my time in the YEG comfortable and pleasant. I’ve met some really great people in the last two seasons and I will cherish your hospitality forever. Thank you, Elks.”
The native of Daytona Beach, Fla. joined the Elks in 2022 as part of Chris Jones’ first wave of hires, serving as one of the key player evaluators alongside assistant general manager Geroy Simon. He previously worked under Jones as a Southeast Regional Scout with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2016 until his departure in 2019. Gahagan later spent time in a similar role with the B.C. Lions and Montreal Alouettes before reuniting with his mentor.
A graduate of Ottawa University in Kansas, Gahagan got his start in personnel as the director of football operations and assistant recruiting coordinator for Lindenwood University in 2004. He also worked as an agent advisor with Axios Sports Management from 2006 until joining the CFL.
According to a report from 630 CHED’s Dave Campbell, chief of staff and special teams assistant Mike Daniels also won’t be back with the organization.
Daniels was a coach and player at Chris Jones’ alma mater of South Pittsburg High School in Tennessee prior to joining the Elks in 2022. He previously worked for the Tennessee American Water Company and as a military police investigator in the U.S. Army.
The Edmonton Elks will begin their 75th anniversary season on Saturday, June 8 when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders at 7:00 p.m. ET.
