French connection: Lions extend Global LB Maxime Rouyer

The B.C. Lions have inked Global linebacker Maxime Rouyer to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2025 season.

The native of Troyes, France first joined the Lions as a free agent in September 2022, seeing action in eight regular-season games and forcing one fumble. He played 12 games in 2023, registering seven special teams tackles and one defensive tackle for a loss in Week 10 against Calgary.

The 29-year-old was originally selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 CFL European Draft by the Edmonton Elks, playing 18 games over two seasons with the team and recording four special teams tackles. After being released by the Elks, he spent the 2022 season with the Wroclaw Panthers of the European League of Football, amassing 89 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown before returning to the CFL with B.C.

Prior to his CFL career, the six-foot-one, 225-pound linebacker attended McGill University from 2015 to 2018, registering 103 total tackles and 4.5 sacks in 23 total games with the Redbirds.
