The reigning Grey Cup MVP is staying in la belle province as the Montreal Alouettes have signed quarterback Cody Fajardo to a contract extension that will keep him in Montreal through the end of the 2025 season.
The Brea, California signed a two-year contract with the Als in February after spending previous three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
In 16 games in 2023, the 31-year-old completed a CFL-best 71.4 percent of his passes for 3,847 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The six-foot-two, 215-pound passer also added 344 yards along the ground with three rushing touchdowns.
“Cody quickly adapted to our culture and quickly showed leadership,” said general manager Danny Maciocia. “He has proven that he can win and excel under pressure. We are excited to continue his association with us.”
In the 110th Grey Cup last month, Fajardo completed 21-of-26 pass attempts for 280 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner to Canadian receiver Tyson Philpot with 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter that gave the Alouettes a 28-24 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It was Montreal’s first Grey Cup championship since 2010.
The seven-year veteran has played for four different teams during his CFL career. He began his career with the Toronto Argonauts in 2016, winning a Grey Cup with the team as a backup in 2017, before moving on to the B.C. Lions in 2018 and then to the Riders from 2019-2022. He has thrown for 14,875 yards, 67 touchdowns and 45 interceptions while also rushing for 2,216 yards and 38 touchdowns in 110 career games, which includes 61 starts.
