Saskatchewan Roughriders release DB Nic Marshall following arrest

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released veteran defensive back Nic Marshall after he was arrested in his home state of Georgia.

The 31-year-old played 17 games for the Riders this past season, recording 31 defensive tackles and tying a career-high with five interceptions. He was scheduled to become a free agent in February.

The six-foot-one, 207-pound cornerback was reportedly charged with possession of a sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, dangerous weapon, or silencer. In the state of Georgia, the felony charge carries a five-year prison sentence. The allegations against Marshall have not been proven in court.

On Sunday, the Riders released a statement indicating they learned of the arrest through media reports and expressing disappointment in Marshall. One day later, they chose to release him from the team.

Marshall played five seasons for the Riders and earned West Division all-star honours in 2021. In 77 career games, he has made 150 defensive tackles, 20 interceptions, and one forced fumble, while also contributing seven rushing touchdowns in his rookie year.
