The Toronto Argonauts have signed defensive coordinator Corey Mace to a contract extension that will keep him in Double Blue at least through the 2024 season.
The 37-year-old first joined the Argos in 2022, helping the team capture their 18th Grey Cup championship with a stellar defensive performance. In 2023, the team currently ranks first in sacks (54), takeaways (42), rushing yards allowed per game (79.6), and big plays allowed (20). They are second in the CFL with 21.4 points allowed per game.
Mace spent six years as the Calgary Stampeders’ defensive line coach (2016-21) during which the club led the league in sacks three times. They also led the league in opponent rushing yards against in 2018, holding opposing offences to a league-low points (301) in 2017 and league-low touchdowns allowed (11) and gain per rush (4.6) in 2016.
The Vancouver native coached and helped develop players such as Charleston Hughes, Micah Johnson, Cordarro Law, and Mike Rose into all-star players. Mace also helped the Stamps hoist the Grey Cup in 2018, his first as a coach.
Mace played 40 regular season games over six seasons (2010-15) for the Stamps, recording 44 tackles, four sacks, and two touchdowns including a receiving touchdown.
The University of Wyoming product won a Grey Cup in 2014 and won the Presidents’ Ring award that same season for his contributions on and off the field in Calgary. Prior to his time in the CFL, the defensive lineman played three seasons in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills (2008-09), appearing in five games.
The Argos (13-2) return to action on Saturday, October 14 when they host the Ottawa Redblacks (4-12).
