The Toronto Argonauts have signed special team coordinator Mickey Donovan to a contract extension.

The veteran coach is currently in his second year with the team after winning a Grey Cup with the Argos in 2022. The club currently ranks first league-wide in return touchdowns, field goal percentage, punt return average, kickoff average, and blocked kicks. Toronto has also not allowed any return touchdowns this season.

“Mickey’s special teams have been a huge positive for us this year, week in and week out,” said head coach Ryan Dinwiddie in a statement. “He’s a great coach, a phenomenal motivator and is able to get the best out of his guys on a daily basis. We’re happy to keep him in Toronto.”

Donovan played three seasons with the Concordia Stingers (2002-04) and was a two-time first-team All-Canadian at linebacker. He also won the Presidents’ Trophy in his final collegiate season as the top defensive player in all of U Sports football.

The native of Laconia, N.H. turned to coaching after suffering a career-ending knee injury and had stints at New Hampshire, Western, and McGill before becoming the head coach at Concordia in 2014. He held the role for four seasons before becoming the special teams coordinator with the Montreal Alouettes in 2018, a job he held through 2021.

The Argos (11-1) are scheduled to host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-7) on Saturday, Sept. 23 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
