Toronto Argonauts can clinch first place in East Division with win over Alouettes

The Toronto Argonauts have seven games left on their regular season schedule, though the club already has a chance to clinch first place in the East Division with a win this week.

At 10-1 and riding a four-game winning streak, Toronto currently sits eight points ahead of the Montreal Alouettes (6-6) with the season series clinched and a game in hand. If the Argos win when the two teams meet at BMO Field on Friday, they will clinch first place in the East Division and host the East Final on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The Argos clinched a playoff spot with a one-sided win over the Alouettes last week and have a chance to finish first in the standings for three consecutive seasons for the first time since 1984. The club’s recently-extended active postseason streak of three years is already its longest since 2007.

Even with a loss this week, the Argos could still make headway in their pursuit of the postseason as a loss by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-7) would clinch a home playoff game for the Boatmen. The Ticats are scheduled to host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (10-3) on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4:00 p.m. EDT.

Toronto is the CFL’s reigning champion after upsetting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in last year’s Grey Cup in Regina by a score of 24-23. It was the club’s eighteenth CFL title and first since 2017 when they upset the Calgary Stampeders at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa.

The Argos (10-1) are scheduled to visit the Montreal Alouettes (6-6) on Friday, Sept. 15 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
