Canadian OL Carter O’Donnell makes 53-man roster with Indianapolis Colts

Canadian offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell has made the 53-man roster with the Indianapolis Colts.

The 24-year-old originally joined the team after going unselected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent his first two seasons with the team on the practice roster but missed all of last year due to a Lisfranc injury he suffered in training camp, which he called “heartbreaking.”

The six-foot-five, 305-pound blocker is one of nine offensive linemen currently on the team’s active roster ahead of Week 1. The unit with be tasked with protecting franchise quarterback Anthony Richardson, who was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida.

O’Donnell was named a first-team All-Canadian as a member of the University of Alberta in 2019 and earned an invitation to the prestigious East-West Shrine Game.

The native of Red Deer, Alta. was a third-round pick of the Montreal Alouettes in the 2020 CFL Draft. He would have possibly been selected first overall had he not received such significant interest from the NFL.

His CFL rights were traded to the Edmonton Elks in 2022 as part of the deal that sent the first overall pick in that year’s draft to Montreal.
