The Calgary Stampeders have released Canadian defensive back Demetri Royer.
The five-foot-eleven, 193-pound defender was a third-round selection in the 2022 CFL Draft out of Western Illinois University. He was born in Clearwater, Fla. but qualified for Canadian citizenship through his father, who was born in Quebec.
Royer spent his entire rookie season on Calgary’s six-game injured list. He returned to the six-game injured list to start the season before being moved to the practice roster for the club’s last two games.
The 26-year-old played his final season of college football in 2019 and recorded 74 total tackles, five pass breakups, and one fumble recovery over 11 starts for the Leathernecks.
The Stampeders (3-5) are scheduled to visit the B.C. Lions (6-2) on Saturday, Aug. 12 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
