Oddsmakers have posted by far the widest spread of the 2023 CFL season thus far as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have opened as 15.5-point favourites over the Edmonton Elks.
The Blue Bombers are off to a 4-2 start to the season after falling to the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday. The club gave up a 16-point lead in the final three minutes of regulation and allowed rookie quarterback Dustin Crum to run for a game-winning touchdown in overtime.
Winnipeg will have star receiver Kenny Lawler back in the lineup this week, which should help boost their offensive attack. He missed the first six games of the season due to an immigration issue that arose after he pled guilty to impaired driving.
Edmonton fell to 0-6 this past week following a 37-29 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The defeat extended the club’s home losing streak to 20 games, which tied the all-time North American professional sports record set by the St. Louis Browns in 1953. Every other team in the CFL has recorded at least two wins this season.
Edmonton and Winnipeg are set to play at IG Field on Thursday, July 20 with kickoff slated for 8:30 p.m. EDT. It will be the first of three meetings between the two clubs this season.
The teams met twice last season with Winnipeg winning both outings by a combined score of 72-21. The Blue Bombers have won seven consecutive regular season games against the Elks dating back to 2019.
