Edmonton Elks to start QB Taylor Cornelius vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Edmonton Elks have retraced their steps, officially naming Taylor Cornelius as their starting quarterback against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The 27-year-old was benched during the team’s loss to the Toronto Argonauts in Week 3 and served as a backup behind rookie passer Jarret Doege during last week’s loss to the Ottawa Redblacks. Doege will be the primary backup behind Cornelius on Thursday, while former first-round pick Tre Ford will dress as the third-stringer.

The Elks have listed newcomer Brett Boyko as their starter at right tackle, though this conflicts with a report from Dave Campbell of 630 CHED. Incumbent starter Josiah St. John has been moved to the six-game injured list with a hand injury he sustained this past week.

Canadian strong-side linebacker Enock Makonzo has been added to the six-game injured list with a foot injury, while Canadian linebacker Woodly Appolon has been added to the one-game injured list due to a knee issue. Jordan Reaves and Mike Dubuisson, both of whom signed with the team this past week, will dress.

The clubs met at Commonwealth Stadium during the opening week of the season with Edmonton being defeated by a score of 17-13. The Elks struggled offensively, though Eugene Lewis had a sensational 102-yard touchdown receptions up the sideline in his debut with the club. Edmonton would likely have won the game were it not for a late-game goal-line stand by Saskatchewan that kept them out of the end zone.

Edmonton lost the season series against Saskatchewan last season by a margin of 2-1, though they won the only meeting at Mosaic Stadium. It was Chris Jones’ first trip back to Regina since leaving the Riders after the 2018 season to take a job with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL.

The Elks (0-4) will visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-1) on Thursday, July 6 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT.
