Week 4 CFL betting odds and picks: Best bets for Edmonton vs. Ottawa, B.C. vs. Toronto

We have an abbreviated Week 4 slate with three games on the docket, and there’s an especially intriguing battle of undefeated squads to close out the ledger. There’s also a clash between two squads looking for their first victory of the season, and we’ll hone in on those Elks-Redblacks and Lions-Argonauts showdowns for this week’s betting picks.

Friday, June 30: Edmonton Elks at Ottawa Redblacks – 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Elks’ significant offseason investment in upgrading the offensive side of the ball has yet to pay off as Edmonton has scored just 44 points through three games.

However, the swapping out of quarterback Taylor Cornelius for rookie Jarret Doege did provide a spark — to an extent — in the Week 3 loss to the Argonauts. It remains to be seen which of the two will draw the start Friday night, though it appears as though Doege has the inside track.

The Redblacks could be the cure for what ails Edmonton. Ottawa’s defence began to show some cracks in Week 3 against the Stampeders, allowing 442 total yards at 7.6 yards per play. The Redblacks have also surrendered a league-high 296.5 pass yards per contest.

Ottawa has also struggled offensively, averaging just 241.5 yards per game and a league-low 4.6 yards per play. Tyrie Adams is set to make his first career start at quarterback and will look to make a quick impact.

Given the fact Edmonton does have plenty of firepower and the Redblacks have not been able to threaten teams offensively, I like the Elks to keep any loss to three points or fewer, even with Eugene Lewis now ruled out with a knee injury.

The Pick: Elks +3.5 or better (-110 or better)

Monday, July 3: B.C. Lions at Toronto Argonauts – 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Lions’ 3-0 record is legitimate, especially after B.C.’s dominant 30-6 win over the Blue Bombers in Week 3.

B.C. is averaging 385.7 yards per game on offence and allowing a CFL-low 211.7 yards per game and 4.4 yards per play on defence.

Vernon Adams could be getting star receivers Keon Hatcher and Dominique Rhymes back from injury, while Taquan Mizzell has offered excellent balance with his work on the ground (224 rush yards at 5.6 yards per carry).

Meanwhile, the 2-0 Argos are averaging a CFL-high 399.0 yards per game of net offence. However, Toronto has shown some vulnerability in pass defence, conceding 288.5 passing yards per game at a CFL-high 77.6 percent completion rate.

Chad Kelly has been effective to an extent in his first two games as the Argos’ starting quarterback. Yet, he’s completed only 58.7 percent of his throws and has just one touchdown to two interceptions. The Lions defence, which has a league-high 11 sacks, will be his toughest challenge yet.

As such, I’m in the camp of the Lions scoring an outright road upset.

The Pick: Lions moneyline (-125 or better)
