The Saskatchewan Roughriders posted a $3.9 million profit in 2022, matching the club’s net revenue from the previous year.
According to a brief report published on the team’s website, the Riders had total revenues of $39.7 million in 2022 with expenses of $35.8 million. When factoring in $3.3 million in non-operating activities, which includes the revenue generated from hosting the 109th Grey Cup, the club’s total profit was $7.2 million.
The Riders indicated that last year’s CFL title game generated almost $70 million in economic activity and added $25.7 million to Saskatchewan’s GDP. The club also committed $750,000 back to the community through its Grey Cup Legacy programs.
Last year’s Grey Cup saw the Toronto Argonauts upset the Winnipeg Blue Bombers by a score of 24-23. It was the first CFL championship game played in Regina since 2013 and the first ever played at Mosaic Stadium, which opened in 2017.
The Riders reported a loss of $7.5 million during the CFL’s cancelled season in 2020 but made a lot of that money back in 2021 when they recorded a net profit of $3.9 million. It would appear as though the club has fully recovered from the financial challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Saskatchewan is one of three community-owned CFL teams, all of which must publicize their financial reports. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced a $4.9 million overall operating profit in April, while the Edmonton Elks announced a net operating loss of $3.3 million in May.
The Riders finished second league-wide in regular season attendance in 2022, averaging 27,431 fans per game. This was the club’s lowest average turnout since 2006 and a 4.9 percent drop from 2021. 28,299 fans attended Saskatchewan’s home-opener last week, which ended in a 45-27 loss to the visiting Blue Bombers.
The Riders (1-1) are scheduled to visit the Calgary Stampeders (1-1) on Saturday, June 24 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. EDT.
