Edmonton Elks move DB Ed Gainey to six-game injured list, sign one

The Edmonton Elks have moved veteran defensive back Ed Gainey to the six-game injured list.

The 33-year-old was injured during the club’s 22-0 loss to the B.C. Lions on Saturday night. The injury took place in the second quarter after he intercepted Vernon Adams Jr. and was hit by Jevon Cottoy on the ensuing return, during which Gainey fumbled.

The two-time CFL all-star has played 103 career games, recording 292 tackles, 23 interceptions, and one sack. He has previously been a member of the Montreal Alouettes, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He is currently is his second season with the Elks.

Edmonton also signed American defensive back Marcus Lewis, who was in training camp with the team before his release last month.

The Maryland product played four games as a member of the Ottawa Redblacks in 2021 and made nine total tackles. He played for the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL this past season and recorded 16 total tackles.

The Elks (0-2) are scheduled to host the Toronto Argonauts (1-0) on Sunday, June 25 with kickoff at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
