Great Scott: Toronto Argonauts sign QB Bryan Scott

The Toronto Argonauts have signed American quarterback Bryan Scott.

The six-foot-two, 220-pound passer was a standout over four seasons at Occidental College (2013-16) where he threw for 9,073 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions and carried the ball 158 times for 402 yards and 13 touchdowns over 33 games. He was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year as a senior.

The 27-year-old went unselected in the 2017 NFL Draft before attending rookie minicamp with the Los Angeles Rams and having a brief stint with the B.C. Lions. He played in The Spring League in April 2018 and signed with the Edmonton Elks the following year, joining the team’s practice roster in October 2019.

Scott opted out of his CFL contract following the cancellation of the 2020 season and returned to The Spring League where he played for the Generals and was named the league’s MVP.

The native of Rolling Hills, Calif. was selected with the third overall pick in the 2022 USFL Draft by the Philadelphia Stars. He threw for 558 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions over three starts before being placed on injured reserve. He was signed by the Las Vegas Vipers of the XFL in January 2023 but was released later that same month.

The Argonauts now have three quarterbacks on the roster for 2023, including Chad Kelly and Ben Holmes. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie has plenty of confidence in Kelly as the club’s starter after McLeod Bethel-Thompson elected to play in the USFL following the expiration of his CFL contract.
