The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have agreed to terms with quarterback Matthew Shiltz on a contract extension, per sources.

The 30-year-old dressed in 17 games for the Ticats in 2022, making three starts while often being featured as part of a two-quarterback system. He completed 85-of-119 pass attempts (71.4 percent) for 935 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing 28 times for 152 yards and a score.

Prior to joining Hamilton last offseason, Shiltz spent four years with the Montreal Alouettes. He played in 50 games, completing 62 percent of his pass attempts for 1,866 yards with eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed 50 times for 313 yards and two touchdowns.

After a standout high school career, Shiltz earned a scholarship to Butler University where he played 17 games during his final two seasons. He completed 58.7 percent of his passes for 4,037 yards with 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while rushing for 857 yards and 13 touchdowns.

After going unselected in the 2016 NFL Draft, the six-foot-two, 205-pound pivot started working for Ernst & Young in Indianapolis. One year later, the Alouettes invited him to a workout. He also had sessions with the Ottawa Redblacks and Calgary Stampeders prior to inking a deal with Montreal in 2017.

The Tiger-Cats signed new franchise quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to a three-year deal and are expected to move on from 2022 starter Dane Evans in the near future. However, Shiltz impressed Hamilton’s staff and has been retained as the primary insurance policy behind Mitchell.
