Chili con Carney: Ticats re-sign American DE Malik Carney

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have re-signed American defensive end Malik Carney for the 2023 season.

The 27-year-old dressed for 17 games and made six starts for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2022, finishing in a tie for the team lead with seven sacks. He added 26 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass knockdown, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He added a touchdown return on his lone fumble recovery.

The six-foot-three, 245-pound pass rusher has played in 21 games over two seasons with Hamilton, registering 34 total tackles, eight quarterback sacks, one pass knockdown, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Carney spent four seasons at the University of North Carolina, playing in 36 games for the Tar Heels. He registered 176 total tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback sacks, four pass knockdowns, five forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries — returning one for a touchdown.

Prior to signing in the CFL, Carney spent time with the Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent.
