Statz crew: homegrown DB Nick Statz re-ups with Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders have re-signed Canadian defensive back Nick Statz.

Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2019 CFL Draft, Statz dressed for 11 games during his second season with the Stamps, making one start. He made 12 special-teams tackles while adding six defensive tackles, one knockdown and his first career interception.

In 23 career games, the five-foot-10, 190-pound safety has accumulated six defensive tackles, 15 special-teams tackles, one interception and one knockdown.

“We’re excited to get Nick back for the 2023 season,” Stampeders’ general manager and head coach Dave Dickenson said in a statement. “He is committed to this city and is a player who provides leadership and versatility to our team.”

The homegrown product of Notre Dame High School, Statz attended the University of Calgary prior to his professional career. In 43 career games for the Dinos, Statz had 125 tackles and eight interceptions, helping the team win a Vanier Cup in 2019.
