Argonauts’ linebacker Henoc Muamba brings Grey Cup to Toronto Maple Leafs game

Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs were treated to sight they hadn’t seen in a long, long time on Monday evening: the appearance a championship trophy.

Toronto Argonauts’ linebacker Henoc Muamba brought the Grey Cup to Scotiabank Arena where the Leafs were playing host to the New York Islanders. Former CFL on TSN play-by-play man Chris Cuthbert provided commentary as Muamba emerged into the crowd, calling Toronto’s win a “huge upset” against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Argos were six-point underdogs at Mosaic Stadium in Regina and faced a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter after Janarion Grant set a new Grey Cup record with a 102-yard punt return touchdown. Toronto pulled ahead on a five-yard touchdown run by A.J. Ouellette with just under four minutes remaining in the game and blocked a potential game-winning field goal from Marc Liegghio before kneeling out the clock.

Muamba, an eleven-year CFL veteran, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Canadian. He recorded three tackles along with a game-changing interception late in the fourth quarter. This was the 33-year-old’s first Grey Cup after previously losing in the big game as a member of Blue Bombers in 2011.

The Leafs lost in overtime to the Islanders by a score of 3-2, falling to 10-5-5 on the year.
