Calgary Stampeders’ OL Derek Dennis out for season with cracked fibula

Calgary Stampeders’ offensive lineman Derek Dennis will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a cracked fibula, according to Postmedia’s Danny Austin.

The injury took place during the team’s 25-11 victory over the B.C. Lions on Saturday. He was replaced at left tackle by Canadian offensive lineman Bryce Bell, though American offensive lineman Hugh Thornton was promoted to the starting lineup earlier this year when Julian Good-Jones missed time at right tackle.

Dennis started all 14 of Calgary’s games at left tackle this season and was recently selected by 3DownNation contributors as the favourite to win Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman this year. The Stampeders have allowed a league-low 12 sacks this season while helping the offence average a league-best 112.2 rushing yards per game.

The 34-year-old is in his third stint with Calgary (2015-16, 2018-19, 2022-present) after spending the 2017 season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the XFL and Edmonton Elks, respectively.

The six-foot-three, 340-pound blocker was a three-time West Division all-star with the Stampeders and captured the Grey Cup in 2018. His best season came in 2016 when he was named the league’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman.
