Controversial defender Kyries Hebert to sign one-day contract to retire with Montreal Alouettes

Kyries Hebert is signing a one-day contract to officially retire as a member of the Montreal Alouettes.

The 41-year-old played twelve seasons in the CFL as a member of the Ottawa Renegades (2004-2005), Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2006-2007), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2010), Montreal Alouettes (2012-2017), and Ottawa Redblacks (2018). He recorded 629 defensive tackles, 149 special teams tackles, 30 sacks, 12 interceptions, and 19 forced fumbles over 173 career games.

Hebert garnered a reputation as a dirty player during his career. He was ejected and assessed a maximum fine for a headshot on Jon Cornish in 2014, which contributed to the running back’s early retirement. He was fined again for a hit on running back Brendan Gillanders in 2016 and a similar hit on quarterback Cody Fajardo in 2017. He was also suspended twice in 2018 for illegal hits on receivers DaVaris Daniels and B.J. Cunningham.

The six-foot-three, 220-pound defender was named the East Division’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2017. He also dressed for 31 career NFL games over three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (2008-2010).

The Alouettes indicated that Hebert will be in Montreal to honour his former teammate Chip Cox, who was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame this past week, at Friday’s game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
