Toronto Argonauts cancel Thursday practice for non-COVID-related reasons

The Toronto Argonauts have cancelled their Thursday practice in a “not COVID-related” decision.

The Argos are scheduled to play the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday in Regina in a rematch of last week’s Touchdown Atlantic battle. However, the Riders have been forced to cancel practice on Tuesday and Wednesday due to a rash of positive COVID-19 cases. At least 10 players are now in COVID protocol.

The Riders have indicated that the club continues to follow all CFL COVID-19 protocols and are in regular contact with the CFL’s medical committee.

The Argos have yet to have a player or staff member exhibit symptoms of the disease and have not recorded any positive tests.

A final decision on whether or not Saturday’s game will be played on time is expected to come on Thursday, which could explain the alteration to the Argos practice schedule. Riders’ general manager Jeremy O’Day has indicated he believes his team cannot play with only one practice this week.

The CFL was forced to reschedule one game in 2021 due to a COVID outbreak which affected the Edmonton Elks. The Argos were also the opponent in that game.
