Steve Sumarah hired as head coach at St. Mary’s University

Steve Sumarah has been hired as the head football coach at St. Mary’s University.

“It’s a huge honour to be named head coach of the Saint Mary’s Huskies,” Sumarah told the school’s website. “To get a chance to do what I love, in the city that I was born and raised, is an amazing opportunity. This is a school I went to; my dad and uncles went here. The history that my family has at Saint Mary’s and in Halifax is very deep, and to be back here in this position is a very exciting moment for myself and my family.”

The Halifax native previously served as the offensive coordinator at St. Mary’s from 1998-2005 and as the head coach from 2006-2011. The club posted a 35-12 regular season record during Sumarah’s tenure as head coach and reached the Vanier Cup in 2007. He was named the U Sports Football Coach of the Year in 2009.

Sumarah spent the past ten years as the head coach with the Carleton Ravens (2012-2021) where the team posted a 29–33 regular season record. He was relieved of his duties in January after the team went 2-4 in 2021.

St. Mary’s finished this past season at the bottom of the AUS standings with a 1-5 record under head coach James Colzie III, who resigned in April.
