Former CFL head coach Corey Chamblin hired by USFL’s Birmingham Stallions

Former CFL head coach Corey Chamblin has been named the defensive backs coach of the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions.

The 44-year-old served as the head coach of the Toronto Argonauts in 2019 but was fired after the team with 4-14 during his first year at the helm. He served as the club’s defensive coordinator in 2017 when Toronto upset the Calgary Stampeders by a score of 27-24 in the 105th Grey Cup.

Chamblin broke into the CFL as the defensive backs coach with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2007 and climbed the coaching ranks quickly, becoming the head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2012. He led the Riders to three consecutive playoff appearances and a Grey Cup title in 2013 but was fired at the midway point of the 2015 season after the club started the year 0-9.

Also hired to Birmingham’s staff were offensive line coach Jonathan Himebauch and wide receivers coach Mike Jones.

Himebauch has served as the offensive line coach with the Calgary Stampeders (2003), the Montreal Alouettes (2009-2011), Edmonton Elks (2014), and Toronto Argonauts (2015, 2017-2018). The three-time Grey Cup champion also served as Toronto’s assistant head coach in 2015 under Scott Milanovich.

Jones was the receivers coach with the Toronto Argonauts in 2009 under Bart Andrus. He has since had stints at Tennessee State, Lake Minneola High School, and East Central Community College.

Birmingham’s head coach, Skip Holtz, most recently served as the head coach at Louisiana Tech (2013-21) where he was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2016.
