‘Proudly Ukrainian-Canadian’: CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie issues statement against Russian invasion of Ukraine

The startling images and videos emerging from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have rocked the world and those in the CFL are no exception.

On Friday, CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie took to Twitter to condemn the conflict and make clear his support for the people of Ukraine.

“Heartbroken by what is happening in Ukraine. Like many of our players, coaches and staff, I am proudly Ukrainian Canadian, and I stand with them against this horrible war. My hopes, thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine, and their friends and family here in Canada.”

After months of tension, Russian president Vladimir Putin launched a coordinated attack on sovereign Ukrainian territory early Thursday morning. As Russian forces currently move on the capital of Kiev, it remains unclear how many casualties have been inflicted by either side but Ukrainian civilians have been caught in the crossfire.

Canada and other Western governments have imposed severe economic sanctions on Russia, but have currently stopped short of providing military assistance on the ground.

According to the 2016 Census, Ukrainian-Canadians make up 3.8 percent of the country’s population, numbering more than 1.3 million.
