Former Riders’ defensive back Christian Campbell selected in USFL draft

American defensive back Christian Campbell has been selected in the tenth round of the USFL draft by the Tampa Bay Bandits.

The 26-year-old became a free agent on Feb. 8 when he wasn’t re-signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He dressed for five games with the Riders during the 2021 season, recording eight tackles at boundary cornerback and field-side halfback.

Campbell is perhaps best remembered for being the player who was ripped to the ground by Andrew Harris during the brawl that broke out in last season’s Banjo Bowl.

The native of Phenix City, Ala. was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played in four preseason games but was released among final training camp cuts.

The New Orleans Saints soon signed Campbell to their practice squad and he finished the season with the club. He was released the following year and had a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers before again becoming a free agent.

Campbell played four seasons at Penn State University where he recorded 102 total tackles, 19 knockdowns, five tackles for loss, four interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
