The Montreal Alouettes have reached a verbal agreement to re-sign All-Star receiver Jake Wieneke, according to a report from Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette.

The 27-year-old has quickly established himself as arguably the CFL’s best red zone target, making 19 touchdown catches over just 32 career regular season games. Wieneke regularly makes highlight-reel grabs, a big part of the reason that Montreal’s offence finished tops in the league in both yards and points per game.

The six-foot-four, 215-pound receiver made 56 receptions for 898 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2021, earning his first CFL All-Star selection. He was the East Division nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie in 2019 after posting 41 catches for 569 yards and eight majors.

Wieneke was viewed as a top priority for the Alouettes to re-sign, but was heavily coveted by other teams. Concerns over his vaccination status had muddied the waters over the South Dakota State products CFL future, but that will have been rectified if Wieneke puts pen to paper with the Als.
