The Edmonton Elks are unlikely to retain ratio-breaking Canadian defensive end Kwaku Boateng in free agency, according to a report from 630CHED’s Dave Campbell.

The CFL’s legal tampering window opened on Sunday, meaning that interested teams have until February 6 to make their offers to Boateng. The Elks are not expected to match, leaving him to decide on a new destination on February 8 or later.

The writing was on the wall for the Ghanaian-born pass rusher after the Elks’ hiring of Chris Jones as head coach and general manager. Jones is known for coveting high level athletic traits in his defensive rotation, sometimes signing unorthodox prospects. He was unlikely to maintain defensive end as a Canadian ratio spot, leaving Boateng expendable.

The former fifth round pick out of Wilfrid Laurier had a down year in 2021, recording 15 tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble in 12 games due to COVID. However, Boateng has proven he can be among the league’s elite in the right situation, notching 25 career sacks in four seasons with Edmonton.

He is currently the 12th ranked player on 3DownNation’s list of top pending free agents.
