The Canadian media landscape has lost a legend, as Regina area broadcaster Mal Isaac passed away on Saturday at the age of 84, according to his friend and colleague Rob Vanstone.
Isaac began his career in broadcasting at the age of 21, working in local radio Weyburn, Yorkton, Regina and Sudbury, Ontario. He would go on to be a sportswriter for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix and Regina Leader-Post, before assuming his most recognizable role with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Isaac joined the CBC in 1974 and remained there until his retirement in 1995. He initially worked in both radio and TV, before switching to mostly radio broadcasts later on. During his long career, Isaac covered the CFL and Saskatchewan Roughriders in various capacities, once famously sporting a Riders’ helmet in a broadcast after a television set fell on him.

He was inducted into the media wing of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2003, alongside his brother Dale.
Isaac had survived five heart attacks, two quadruple bypass surgeries, a heart transplant and a stroke.
