Edmonton Elks general manager Chris Jones knows he needs to find head coach Chris Jones a bonafide quarterback.

The Elks currently have Nick Arbuckle, Taylor Cornelius and Dakota Prukop on the roster at the most important position in football, but it doesn’t seem like Jones is content with those three.

“We’re going to look at what we have first. I just got off the phone with a guy about two quarterbacks that are on the street, one of them with an NFL background and one of them without,” Jones told Edmonton Sun reporter Terry Jones.

“You can’t win in the CFL without a quarterback. We’re just going to keep grinding away and see where we can end up. The thing is, you can’t just magically have one, but you have to figure out a way to have one to win with.”

Last time Jones was in Edmonton Michael Reilly was his QB and he played a major role in leading Edmonton to a Grey Cup championship in 2015. Reilly is currently under contract with the B.C. Lions for the 2022 season. However, there could be changes on the west coast and elsewhere in the CFL and Jones has been monitoring those situations.

“There’s a couple guys in free agency. Those two in Hamilton are available,” Jones said.

“They just signed the young kid Jake Maier in Calgary, so it’ll be interesting to see if they re-sign Bo Levi Mitchell. But John Hufnagel is not going to deal him here. I’ve been around Huff long enough to know he’s not going to do that.”

Arbuckle, Cornelius and Prukop are under contract for the year, but Jones could still choose to pursue a veteran passer in free agency or through trade.
