The B.C. Lions have signed American placekicker Nick Vogel, the team announced on Tuesday. As per CFL rules, Vogel has entered mandatory COVID quarantine protocol.

The five-foot-nine, 188-pounder attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) from 2017-19 and left as the program’s third all-time leading scorer with 269 points while making good on 41-of-47 field goal attempts. Vogel also set a school record for his percentage on one-point converts, making 128 of 131 tries.

Vogel signed with the Baltimore Ravens before being released just prior to training camp in 2020.

The move came one week after B.C. placekicker Jimmy Camacho went zero-for-three on his field goal attempts in a 31-29 loss to the Toronto Argonauts. The rookie out of Fresno State made 13 of his 14 career attempts but has gone one-for-six over his last three games.

The Lions started the year with rookie Takeru Yamasaki at placekicker but he connected on just four-of-eight field goal attempts in two games with a number of his misses coming from relatively short distances.

B.C. (4-7) is slated to visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday in what will be a must-win game with the club sitting four points back of the third-place Calgary Stampeders (6-6) in the West Division.
