Former Elks’ OL Jacob Ruby issues apology for misrepresenting vaccination status

Canadian offensive lineman Jacob Ruby has spoken publicly for the first time since being released by the Edmonton Elks at the end of August, releasing the following statement on Twitter.

The past weeks have been really difficult for my family and I. I want to make something clear, I made a mistake. I made a mistake in misrepresenting my vaccination status. I came forward with my mistake and have been willing to accept the consequences. I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected by my poor decision. Specifically the Elks organization, CFLPA, and CFL, who have worked so hard to put this season on safely. This has been a learning experience for me and as I strive to be a better man, father and husband, I will set a good example of learning from mistakes and better myself going forward.

The 28-year-old started the first three games of the season at left guard for Edmonton but was released for violating COVID protocols. The CFL reportedly issued a directive to all teams not to sign Ruby for the remainder of the 2021 season.

The six-foot-seven, 320-pound blocker signed in Edmonton in 2017 after spending two seasons in Montreal. He was originally drafted by the Alouettes who selected him in the first round of the 2015 CFL Draft out of Richmond. In three seasons with the Elks, Ruby appeared in 43 games while making 22 starts.

Edmonton has gone 1-4 since the COVID-19 outbreak that infected 13 players on the team. Second-year man Kyle Saxelid initially took over Ruby’s spot at left guard, though he has since been pushed out to tackle.

Former first-round pick Tomas Jack-Kurdyla has started the last three games at left guard and is slated to do so again when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit Commonwealth Stadium on Friday.
