Elks quarterback Trevor Harris named top performer from Labour Day Weekend

Trevor Harris, Vernon Adams Jr. and Brandon Alexander were named the CFL top performers of the week for the 2021 Labour Day Weekend.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges made up of former CFL players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, as well as Pierre Vercheval of RDS, who independently send their selections to the CFL head office.

QB | TREVOR HARRIS | EDMONTON ELKS

Harris led the way as Edmonton snapped an eight-game losing streak in the Labour Day Classic. The Edinboro University product completed 31-of-41 passes (75.6 percent) for 398 yards and threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers in the Elks’ 32-20 victory over their provincial rivals.

Harris found Ernest Edwards from 45 yards out for his first career CFL touchdown to give Edmonton an early 6-3 lead. Jalen Tolliver scored from six yards to extend the visitor’s advantage to 13-3 in the second quarter. Harris concluded his day with passing majors to James Wilder Jr. and Mike Jones in the fourth.

The win marked Harris’s first victory in 12 career starts against Calgary. He currently leads the league with 1,260 passing yards and sits third with six touchdown passes on the season.

QB | VERNON ADAMS JR. | MONTREAL ALOUETTES

Adams Jr. tied a career-high with four touchdown passes in Montreal’s 51-29 win over the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night. Adams passed for 288 yards on 18-of-23 passing (78.2 percent) and added 35 yards on the ground.

Adams found Eugene Lewis in the first quarter with a 34-yard strike to stake the Alouettes to a 9-0 lead. He then connected with Jake Wieneke midway through the second to put the visitors ahead 19-3. The native of Pasadena, California, would go on to throw another major to Lewis and Wieneke, giving each receiver over 100 yards on the day.

This season, Adams has passed for 931 yards, rushed for 157 yards and leads the league with nine touchdown passes.

DB | BRANDON ALEXANDER | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Alexander played a big part in smothering the Saskatchewan offence on Labour Day Weekend. He recorded two interceptions, four defensive tackles and added a special teams tackle in a 23-8 victory at Mosaic Stadium on Sunday.

His first interception came on the Riders second drive of the game. Alexander jumped a route up the middle and returned the ball 20 yards, leading to a Sean McGuire touchdown to open the scoring.

With Winnipeg ahead 13-8 in the fourth, the University of Central Florida alum picked off  Cody Fajardo again to set the stage for a field goal which opened up an eight-point lead for the Bombers.

Alexander’s first two interceptions of the year pushed his career total to six in his four seasons in the CFL.
