Four Elks ruled out of Labour Day Classic due to COVID protocol

The Edmonton Elks will be without four players on Monday following the team’s COVID-19 outbreak that affected 13 players.

The Elks will be without American receiver Armanti Edwards, national receiver Tevaun Smith, American linebacker Keishawn Bierria, and American defensive back Aaron Grymes due to COVID protocol. All four players have started games for Edmonton this season.

Players are placed in COVID protocol when they have tested positive for the virus or been deemed a close contact of someone who has.

The receivers will be replaced by rookie Americans Jalen Tolliver and Earnest Edwards. Malik Clements will take over from Bierria at middle linebacker, while Darius Williams will replace Grymes at field-side halfback.

Head coach Jaime Elizondo indicated during the practice week that the team would be without “a group” of players. Considering the size of the team’s outbreak, only being without four isn’t a huge number to overcome.

The Elks visit the Calgary Stampeders for the annual Labour Day Classic at McMahon Stadium at 4:30 p.m. ET.
